Mobile phones: IMPACT, CHALLENGES and PREDICTIONS

The mobile phone revolution is only getting started. Simple "feature phones" have helped to bring over a billion Africans out of extreme poverty. Simple add-ons are giving expert medical care to distant Mexican towns. E-commerce is boosting the level of living for millions of people in India. We are only now beginning to comprehend how much cell phones will enhance our lives in rich countries.

Overall, the cell phone's influence on society has been overwhelmingly favorable. This influence has been most noticeable with the two most basic mobile phone technologies: speak and text. These basic behaviors have dramatically influenced the lives of billions of people. One moving example is of a poor woman in an Indian hamlet who receives microfinance to purchase a cell phone and service. She then gives farmers in her community, for a little fee, the use of her personal phone to contact adjacent communities to discover the best markets for their goods. Everyone comes out ahead! The woman, the farmers, and the customers benefit from fresher products at a lower cost.

Mobile app development is still in its infancy. Only a small portion of the potential of the mobile phone has been unleashed. Services, particularly Internet connectivity, are prohibitively expensive, as are phones themselves. Smartphones attempt to do everything for everyone, yet none of them do it optimally. Mobile phones are created as mass-market commodities, with little consideration for the reality that people are unique and that different people benefit from phones tailored to their own needs.

We envision a society in which the mobile phone makes the most modern medical technology available to everybody, therefore resolving the quandary of a healthcare system that focuses on healing diseases rather than preventing them.
We envision a future in which mobile-phone-enhanced education occurs 24 hours a day, not only in the classroom; kids are educated in communication is a critical component, and global information is accessible to all.
