Sunday just gone

We hosted a terrific Vets match at the Leafe on Sunday. This was Old Mid Whitgiftians Vets (a lot of old Leafe legends) vs. Raynes Park Vale Vets. A tremendous exhibition showing talent that just doesn't go away - even if the legs aren't what they used to be!

The OMWV side included some old Leafe names including:
Michael Lidbury
Stuart Massey
Jamie Sinclair
Duncan Alger
Matt Kember
Paul Kember
Peter Garland
Lee Cormack
John Fowler (scored a hat trick)
Lee Sidwell

Former Brighton player Nicky Forster also played and I have an inkling he got a hat-trick too. There were a few others too some I didn't know and some others I dare say I forget - apologies.

Nappa ran on once with the magic sponge, rolling back the years.

Steve Kember appeared to be managing the side and Dave Swindlehurst was there too - no doubt offering a little advice.

It was a very entertaining match if a little one-sided. The Leafe legends ran out 8-0 winners.

Do please take time to have a look at some photos I took

I saw it advertised on the day, by then it was too late as other plans had been made, why didn't this get more publicity?

It would be nice if they played their home games at Church Road going forward and rebadged themselves as Whyteleafe Vets as I'm sure we could attract a decent crowd. I remember when our Vets side won the Surrey Cup three years on the trot.

In case you were thinking it, Roscoe doesn't qualify until October!

Here's a link to a recent podcast interview with Peter Garland in which he talks primarily about his time at Dulwich Hamlet, but also his entire career in football including his time at Leafe:

He got it wrong. He moved to Croydon then Whyteleafe. He joined us the same time as Ali Reeve and Mark Dickinson (Geordie).

[EDIT: Actually, I think he may have gone back to Croydon after he left us]
