Hastings on saturday

By Clive (legacy user)20/2/2015 16:31Fri Feb 20 16:31:05 2015

We travel 54.4 miles tomorrow to The Pilot Field in Hastings. A journey that is likely to be quicker on the outward leg as it is all downhill.

Some folk still reminisce about a famous 2-1 victory there many moons ago. A 25 yard screamer from Lewis Taylor into the top corner was followed by a home equaliser. All square until the last minute when a long ball enticed their goalie to charge out of his box. Just as he was about to lob the red faced lad, Mark Tomkins generously offered him some advise " You are in the wrong position, keeper". If you look carefully near the entrance you may well be able to still see the tyre marks from Big Nev's speedy exit stage left the even Snaggerpuss would have been proud of.

Hastings have had a rollercoaster of a season. 3 managers so far. Their home record is similar to ours in a way. Only 3 wins to date. Their last league game was a 1-0 defeat away to Folkestone where they also missed a pen. I saw them play at Merstham a few weeks ago and they played some good stuff and were unlucky to lose 2-1 to a late goal when a clearance hit the ref and rebounded to Omar Folkes who scored with a first time shot.

We have not beaten Hastings yet this season having lost to them in the F A Cup and drawn in the league.
I predict a battle in Hastings but one where we need to be the conqueror.

We went to Hastings on Wednesday for a family day out, which was nice but.....

The A21 was one great big traffic jam. It took us well well over 2 hours, so leave early.

See you there.

Glad your game is on at Hastings today, though I think that is just a little bit too far for me to travel today.

I must take issue with Paulo about the referee being the subject of a lawsuit if a player is injured.

This is an urban myth and is not the case. If a player feel the conditions are dangerous then it is up to him to not play.

The referee makes a judgement call of fitness to play but that is the end of it, there is no comeback if he/she is wrong

No....refs are liable.

The referee has SOLE responsibility for players safety. That's why you have a pitch inspection, a risk assessment if you will, before the game. If icy or snow, he must inspect the surrounds as well to ensure the safety of the ground too. What happens if they play thru a storm and a player gets struck by lightening. The ref is responsible. It says so , therefore he is liable. I'm sure that the FA insure their refs , as the ECB do the umpires in Cricket, so in the end the FA would pick up the bill, but then that ref would no longer be allowed to officiate again. its the age we live in i'm afraid but what i am concerned about is the consistency of the pitch inspections.
Having seen the guidelines , i cant see any reason to play that game on Monday, when the forecast for the reserve day was good.
A pain to travel twice, but surely in the interest of player safety and reasonable football, then it would have been the correct decision.
Also, their pitch was deemed unfit Sat, but had no standing water!!
Makes you wonder does it not!!!
The FA and all the leagues ask for respect, but respect is earned by getting the big calls right, and this Ref got it badly wrong on Monday, so every decision after the call to play, was effectively wrong.
Interesting, had it gone to pens, he would not have been able to see the penalty spot of the goal line, so there fore when marked areas of the pitch have been rubbed out or mudded over, you must call the game off. Its in the LAWS of the game!!

Hope its a good game and the pitch allows us to play to our strengths.

Sing like we did when we went by coach and we can't fail to win!

Another unbelievable match. We should have won this by a running mile. Appalling decision to sent Roscoe off after ridiculous play acting by their No. 8. Ref didn't have a clue what one, let alone ten yards are. Really angry now.

It sounds like another blood boiling Ref again - why do we get so many?

I'm the wally. I did have a few drinks yesterday, got up early this morning and went back to bed "for an hour" at 11.00 AM. I assume that when my alarm went off at 12.00 I simply thumped it, rolled over and nodded off again, waking up at 1.30 PM.

Anyway the GOOD NEWS is that both Worthing and Herne Bay drew their games too meaning we stay in the play-off spot.

First and foremost we take our hats off to all involved at Hastings for getting the game on. The pitch was fabulous.

Overall we deserved to win but for a crazy moment that the lino saw R O S C O= E stamp on one of theirs. Rosco!

They looked like a club that are very worried about the drop.

I am sure others will say more BUT I cant leave without saying something about the ref. We had a central free right on the edge of the box, he stepped out 10 paces which arrived two yards north of the penalty spot. Well I am not an academic but 18 yard box/penalty spot 12 yards you do the maths, it could only have been 5 yards. Nuts

Agree with Paul, but we lost control having levelled after giving a free gift in the 3rd minute, The Ref started to get under the skin of our players with his silly decisions and I thought that the red was correct but Rosco was pulled down first in my view, but like a number of other occasions the true decision was not made. Very disappointing we at least got a point and we worked harder with 10, until the disaster mix up that gave them the equaliser.

Another eventful afternoon.

Roscoe should have scored in 2nd minute after going round the keeper.next thing is we are 1 down scored by their number 8.
We dominated 1st half but only started creating chances in the last 15 mins. Greg scored a beauty from free kick just before half time.
The Lino sent Roscoe off 5 mins into 2nd half after a tussle with their number 8 who went down like a ton of bricks for such a big boy.
Jason came on and scored after the hour after a great through ball from Sam.
We continued to dominate but understandably the 10 men tired in the last 10 mins and they equalised after a mix up in our defence.

Overall a feeling of disappointment. We were far the better side and played some lovely stuff even with 10 men. Great effort again by the boys. The biggest downside today is that Roscoe will get a 3 game ban.

Unfortunately I must mention the red. I'm not necessarily complaining about the sending off. The Lino made the decision I didn't see what happened. But the ref was very poor. Paulo thought we could have had 8 pens. I think 3 were probable. The most blatant was a push in Gregs back 3 seconds before Roscoe was sent off.. I have never seen a ref tKe 10 paces in the style of Charlie Chaplin before. Plus he didn't pace it out in a straight line but made an arc for the last 5 paces. Goodness knows how Greg managed to score with the wall it's customary 6 yards away.. We had numerous free kicks charged down because of Charlie.

Finally a word about their number 8 . That word is C- - - T(that is a FIVE letter word starting with C and ending with T. although I could have shortened it). I have seen him play before and I warned everyone to look out for him before the game started. He is constantly in the ref's ear all game and is very clever at winning free kicks. Well done mate. That's sportsmanship for you.
