Academy team?

In the world of football, especially academy football, simply put, a team cannot survive a whole season with just one goalkeeper. For example, if the goalkeeper falls ill or is injured, what are you going to do? What if he decides to stop playing football completely and drops out of the academy? Then what? The goalkeeper and substitute goalkeeper makes up 50% of the team - no goalkeeper or substitute = no team.

Whyteleafe Academy team

As a Whyteleafe fan, and a follower of the Whyteleafe Academy team in particular as potential future football stars in the making, the comment was specific to the Whyteleafe Academy team who only have the one goalkeeper.

Other teams have more than one goalkeeper, not Whyteleafe Academy. Any football team worth its salt has more than one goalkeeper.

This is not an attack on the lone goalkeeper - he is, after all, working on his own. He needs support of other goalkeepers within the team, not a player standing in as a goalkeeper out of his comfort zone.

Have you seen their match results since the beginning of the season?

What you have to understand is, we suffered from acutely from very late recruitment for the 2014/15 season. It was a busy summer for all of us last year and unfortunately this meant we were unable to get the players in we wanted. There was no decision to go with one goalkeeper and everybody at the club knows we would be far better off with a larger squad including more than one goalkeeper.

Recruiting players midseason presents us with other problems on the education side and so it really isn't as straightforward as some would like.

We hope that next year will be different. Whilst some people are attracted to 'big name' clubs but there are strong practical reasons why they should consider coming to Whyteleafe. We carry out our education on site - so there's no constant bussing back and forwards between a football club and a college and our pitch facilities are so good other academies regularly use it when their own muddy grass field is unplayable.

I agree with all you have said. Basically put, you cannot start an academy team or a club team for a whole season with just one goalkeeper - it is common sense. And especially an academy.
