I am sure most will have seen by now Youtube footage of our very own Rob Tolfrey at the centre of extraordinary scenes at the end of Kingstonian's narrow defeat to Bognor Regis Town on Monday evening.
It even featured on Talksport's Sports Bulletins yesterday and I am pleased to say not in a sensationalist way.
In short, Rob jumped into the crowd after the final whistle to confront a Bognor supporter and the scenes, certainly the 6 minute version are very distressing. He was clearly in a dreadful state being encoraged away from the scene, seemingly in meltdown and looked utterly lost and distraught. He was reportedly "in pieces" in the dressing room afterwards.
Asked to name a non-league Nice Guy XI you would say Rob Tolfrey + 10 others so goodness only knows what could have provoked such an incident?
I post really to say that rather than being vilified or punished I hope circumstances are fully explored and that Rob gets the help and support he needs to recover and resume his career.
His time at Whyteleafe was outstanding, quite magnificent week in week out, and he remains one of the finest keepers I have ever seen in our division.
Re: Rob Tolfrey
Yes all very strange. Always have a bit of banter with Rob when he comes down to the Leafe eg "don't drop your cup of tea" and he always takes it well . Seems to be a top bloke so something drastic must have happened. Wasn't totally sure whether it was Bognor or Kingstonian fans?
Coincidentally, Mark, you have a bit of form with a player jumping the fence and chasing you, don't you? Plus the goalie's Dad who thumped you at Fleet?
Re: Rob Tolfrey
Ah yes, thanks for reminding me Clive.
The first was Crowborough's 6'6" 17 stone Captain on the last day of the season. I hid in the Club Shop but we shook hands afterwards in the Clubhouse (like a bunch of bananas his were) and I phoned their Club Secretary to apologise for the wider altercation on the Monday.
It followed some diabolical play acting that got one of ours sent off. I offered them "Good luck back in the Sussex League where you belong" in somewhat fruity language, although karma saw us stepping down a year or two later.
The Fleet keeper's Dad mistook me for The Voice of Reason, which hurt more than anything.
The difference is though that I used to dish it out verbally, but am a bit calmer these days, mostly.
Back to the serious business, it was so remarkably out of character for Rob and I really hope he is in good hands and getting the help needed to recover.
It even made Sky Sports news on Monday night.
A statement by Kingstonian last evening stated that a full investigation is taking place with full cooperation of the FA and Bognor Regis FC. The police were called to the ground and are also investigating. No details really, but one of Rob's teammates twittered on Monday that Rob was spat at and punched by a fan on the pitch.... the videos i have seen dont show the incident leading up to rob leaping the barrier.
I have to agree, that knowing Rob as we do, he must have been well pi**ed off to do that and the provocation must have been immence.
Kaz was doing the FA report on it last night, so I guess we will just have to see what happens, as she couldnt expand on what we already have seen due to the process of the investigation.
