Physical Activity and Health Education in Classroom

Incorporating physical activity in the classroom helps students improve their wellbeing regarding health, focus, and academic performance. In a literature class teachers should adopt a participative approach to teaching to encourage active learning (Dobbins, Husson, DeCorby, & LaRocca, 2013). In such classroom environment, one can incorporate physical activity into learning through several ways.
To act out stories is one of the methods of incorporating active learning in a participative literature class. This model entails classroom fitness games where students imitate actions portrayed in the stories. Essential to this type of active learning is the choosing of narratives with a lot of action. Students are prepped about all movements such as running, pretending to swim, and other relevant activities about the story. This type of learning is characterized by active listening, learning of the action, and demonstration of movements practiced.
Teachers can also adopt classroom warm-ups and fitness breaks in between class activities. Some of the exercises fit for this program include quick classroom stretch, around the class walk, and few jumping jacks. Classroom warm-ups and fitness breaks comprise an excellent way to start lessons and inject some oomph into drowsy students.
Jumping jacks and bouncy chairs are another creative ways of incorporating physical activity in the classroom. Therefore, this method cuts across age and subjects hence suitable for learning in a participative literature class. As course instructors review concepts, learners stand next to their seats or desks and do a jumping jack instead of raising their hand when volunteering. The tutor awards point to each actively learning students to encourage participation. Alternatively, instead of jumping jack, tutors can have some students chair replaced by exercising balls, which are rotated around the class throughout the day depending on student’s participation level.
These methods will not only make learning fun but will also make it healthier. Physical activities in classroom boost students’ health, focus, and academic performance. Therefore, it is important to consider incorporating these activities into classroom learning.
The integration of health education in the learning process exposes students to an array of health issues such as nutrition, sex and reproduction, drugs and alcohol abuse, safety, and physical growth. Adoption of this kind of learning not only increases a child’s health state but also inspire positive attitude towards their personal wellbeing as well as healthy behavior. Incorporating health education in classroom learning entails the provision of skill-focused instruction.
The instructions must be comprehensive, sequential, and culturally appropriate in line with the school’s health education curriculum. The instructions must address assessment of personal vulnerability particularly, to health risk taking, and health risk-taking of peers. The student should evaluate the impact of family, peers, the media, and culture on health behavior (Benes & Alperin, 2016). In addition, they can connect with their colleagues in the classroom who affirm health-promoting behavior.
Tutors can use health education case studies to nurture health behavior among students. Active participation in case studies exposes students to the medical decision-making process, problem-solving, effective communication, and promotes negotiation, assertiveness, refusal, and advocacy skills. Health case study analysis, allows the student to reflect upon health issues with potential impact on their lives and of the community as a whole and make an informed decision.
Moreover, one can incorporate health information into the classroom by involving parents and families in health education. Tutors can collaborate with parents to advance health education in classroom learning. Teachers can send parents health educational materials or invite them to school sponsored activities where both the teachers and relatives discuss health issues.
Ideally, exposure of student to health education raises their awareness of health care information. This can be achieved through detailed instructions, case studies, and parent involvement. Integrating the components listed above in classroom learning leads to the realization of health objectives in a learning environment.
Summary
Physical Activities incorporated into classroom learning include Act out stories, warm-ups and fitness breaks, and Jumping Jacks and bouncy chairs. These activities help students improve their wellbeing regarding health, focus, and academic performance. Methods through which one can integrate health information in the classroom include detailed health education instructions, cased studies, and parent involvement. Through these practices, students are exposed to nutrition, sex and reproduction, drugs and alcohol abuse, safety, and physical growth education.
